Athea honours Con Colbert, who was executed for his role in the Easter Rising.
Con Colbert was executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol on 8 May 1916 for his part in the Easter Rising.
In Athea, County Limerick, where he spent his childhood, commemorative ceremonies marked the 50th anniversary of his death. A parade of veterans marched through the town, and a plaque was unveiled on a street named in his honour, Con Colbert Street.
The Minister for Defence, Mr Michael Hilliard, inspected a guard of honour, while Con Colbert's brother, Dan, turned the first sod for a new parish hall and community centre to be known as Con Colbert Memorial Hall. The site was blessed by the Very Rev P Canon Enright, PP, Abbeyfeale.
