Terence O'Neill pleased with the general election results in Northern Ireland.
On 25 November 1965, the people of Northern Ireland voted to return the existing Stormont government led by the Ulster Unionist Party. Seán Duignan reports from Stormont on the election, which saw the Labour Party lose two seats that had been held by David Blakely and Billy Boyd.
Captain Terence O'Neill, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and Northern Ireland Premier, spoke to reporter Cecil Deeney and expressed his satisfaction that the people had voted in support of the existing Northern Ireland government under his leadership.
I hope that this vote of confidence is a vote in support for the bridge building activities which the government and myself, perhaps, as well have pursued.
Captain Terence O'Neill said he is open to another meeting with Taoiseach Seán Lemass. A meeting between the two leaders had taken place in January 1965, which led to ongoing discussions between civil servants and ministers on both sides of the border. He is optimistic that these discussions will lead to cooperation in tourism and other areas.
