The student union at UCD says making contraceptives available on campus is not illegal.

Contraception is illegal in Ireland, but the student union at University College Dublin (UCD) is making non-prescription contraceptives available to its members on a voluntary subscription basis.

College authorities have said that they will investigate the matter.

Contraceptives have been available to UCD students since last February through its Earlsfort Terrace and Belfield Student Union shops. A similar service operates gn Trinity College Dublin (TCD).

President of UCD Students' Union Enda Connolly says, there is a clear demand for this service, and their aim is to educate young people about contraceptives. Lack of access to contraceptives can result in crisis pregnancies, with teenagers,

Having to get married, going to England for abortions.

Enda Connolly acknowledges that the student union has received some complaints about their actions on this matter, but overall there have been no major objections.
