New research has revealed that there are more than ten thousand trees in Dublin city centre.
The first ever cataloguing of the trees in Dublin city centre has been carried out by a PhD student from Papua New Guinea who is studying at University College Dublin.
Tine Ningal, a Geography PhD student, has spent nine months cataloguing all the trees which line the streets between the Royal and Grand canals. These records include a photograph and details such as the species, size and condition of each tree. Dr Gerard Mills of the School of Geography at UCD has been supervising the research. The findings show that there is one tree for every fifty residents in the city.
This is the first comprehensive survey of trees in Dublin City Centre.
The trees in parks and private spaces were catalogued using internet mapping tools.
It is hoped that the research findings will help to assess the environmental benefits for Dublin of trees and provide a basis for a future planting strategy.
