Tips and a reminder for the public as Ireland puts the clocks back an hour for the winter.
The switch to winter time means it will be darker in the evenings and brighter in the mornings once the clocks go back one hour. This is a busy time of year for horologist Kevin Chellar, who must manually set back his collection of clocks.
The clocks go back at 2.00 am tomorrow morning to 1.00 am and daylight saving time ends. As the evenings get darker, Brian Farrell of the Road Safety Authority warns pedestrians and cyclists to make sure to wear high-visibility jackets.
Opponents to the time change, including Fine Gael TD David Stanton, say darker evenings push up our energy costs and discourage activity. Some studies have found that people would be healthier if the evenings were brighter.
