For the first time in Ireland 'May Night' by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is being performed at Wexford Festival Opera
An operatic love story by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 - 1908), 'May Night' is based on a Ukranian folktale written down by his compatriot, the novelist, short story writer and playwright Nikolai Gogol (1809 - 1852). It also includes elements of the supernatural, which express, according to director Stephen Medcalf,
That yearning of the poetic soul.
Liuba Orfenova is répétiteur (vocal coach and pianist) for this production of 'May Night'. No stranger to the Wexford Festival Opera, she enjoys the atmosphere in the town and is looking forward to the programme this year.
In contrast to Ireland, 'May Night' is well known in Russia, but Liuba Orfenova hopes that after this performance, Irish audiences will,
Recognise us once again.
Francis O'Connor explains how the designs of the set and costumes have been primarily influenced by the music.
Conductor Vladimir Jurowski is particularly pleased to work with the National Symphony Orchestra. He maintains that they are one of the best he has worked with.
