Primate of All Ireland Cardinal William Conway pays tribute to President Éamon de Valera following his death.
Former Taoiseach and President of Ireland Éamon de Valera died on 29 August 1975. Cardinal William Conway, addressing the nation, said that the president's death marked the departure of one of the great charismatic figures of Irish history.
The cardinal also acknowledged Éamon de Valera's intense Christian faith and devotion.
His devotion to the Mass and to the reading of the Gospels lay at the very heart of his personal life.
Until the end, Éamon de Valera was meticulous about reciting the Angelus every day at noon and at six in the evening. His great intelligence and political acumen, alongside his faith, contributed to his strength of character.
