Tributes paid to Eugene McCabe, who wrote novels, short stories, plays for theatre and drama for television.
The writer Eugene McCabe has died aged 90. His plays included 'King of the Castle' and a trilogy of television plays set along the border with Northern Ireland, while his novel 'Death and Nightingales' was recently adapted for television.
Described as one of Ireland's leading contemporary writers, Eugene McCabe lived most of his life along the border during The Troubles. He received praise for giving voice to both communities and providing balance in his work.
Garry Hynes, artistic director at Druid Theatre, describes Eugene McCabe as a lovely man whose novel 'Death and Nightingales' is a masterpiece and one of the best novels she has read.
His plays had a great strength and vigour, and he carried that in his face.
