Transdev launch a safety campaign following a number of incidents with Luas trams in Dublin.
As part of a new safety campaign, Luas operator Transdev has released a video of crashes and near misses involving the Luas. The safety warning is deemed necessary due to changes in road use resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Managing Director of Transdev Dublin Light Rail Seamus Egan explains that there are noticeably more children out and about.
We have had incidents where we've had some near misses with children playing in and around the Luas tracks.
He appeals to parents to highlight the dangers of trams to children and young teenagers. The Trandev safety appeal reminds motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to look out for Luas trams and to think twice before crossing in front of them. While Luas drivers are trained to anticipate what other road users are doing and to react to their actions,
Trams cannot swerve out of the way.
With more people cycling due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Dublin Cycling Campaign chairperson Kevin Baker highlights the need for rubber infilling of some tram tracks to prevent cyclists from falling over in traffic.
