Ministers discuss a proposal to rebroadcast BBC 1 in Ireland through the RTÉ network.
The Minister for State in charge of broadcasting in Britain, Lord Alexander Harris is in Dublin for talks with the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, Dr Conor Cruise O'Brien. Discussions which took place at the GPO, centred around the possibility of broadcasting BBC 1 through the Irish television network. This is one option being considerd around the proposal for RTÉ to operate a second national television channel.
Following the meeting, both men spoke to RTÉ News. They agree that the decision to broadcast BBC 1 on an RTÉ network is a decision for the Irish people. Dr Conor Cruise O'Brien is keen to get the views of people in those areas of the country where the only television channel available is RTÉ.
Are we going to have BBC 1 here?
Reporter Colm Connolly also presses the men on the subject of RTÉ television being made aviailable in Northern Ireland through the BBC network. Dr Conor Cruise O'Brien says that this is under review.
