The famed walls of Derry have been reopened to the public.
The city walls were closed eight years ago for security reasons. The IRA had used the walls to launch a bomb attack on the RUC. Following negotiations between Derry City Council and the RUC, they have now been reopened. The newly elected Mayor John Kerry played a central role in the negotiations and says that the reopening means the revival of a Derry tradition of walking around the walls. He now hopes that the military installations dotted around the city will be removed.
The city walls have often been described as the city's greatest tourist attraction. Derry is the only completely enclosed walled city in Ireland and Britain. Today a group of visitors from County Sligo were able to take in the city and walk the Derry walls.
