A range of art forms from national and international creators at a festival promoting the Irish language.
The Éigse Carlow Arts Festival came about when a local school teacher suggested an arts festival for the town which would also encourage people to speak Irish.
The festival celebrates a variety of art forms, with sculpture and painting exhibitions classical, jazz and pop music events. Two Scottish artists William Crozier and Peter Howson will be showing work. Established Irish artists like Elizabeth Cope are also part of the festival providing workshops for aspiring artists. The work of dozens of other artists will be exhibited throughout the ten day festival. Sculptor Eileen McDonagh is exhibiting a number of limestone pieces and will run a workshop to demonstrate her craft.
The thread running through the ten days of art and music is the Irish language and the gentle encouragement of its use.
Organiser Bríde de Róiste believes that Éigse has changed attitudes to the Irish language by taking it out of the classroom.
