Catherine McGuinness gives her reaction to decisions made at the General Synod of the Church of Ireland.

The General Synod of the Church of Ireland took place over three days in Dublin. Two of the most disputed motions in recent times on the agenda were the ordination of women and the marriage of divorced persons in the Church of Ireland.

While the vote on ordaining women as priests was defeated by a two thirds majority, it was not ruled out completely. Delegates acknowledged that the issue is likely to come up again in a future Synod, and the decision was one for delay rather than for rejection.

Remarriage of divorced people in the Church of Ireland was also defeated but by a much smaller margin.

Senator Catherine McGuinness was one of those presenting the argument in favour of remarriage. She is disappointed with the result but sees hope for the future.

Opinion is changing, gradually, but changing.
