The Kish Lighthouse is blessed while berthed at St Michael's Wharf in Dún Laoghaire.
The new Kish Lighthouse is ready to be towed from its mooring post at St Michael's Wharf in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, to its final resting place at the Kish Bank.
Right Reverend Monsignor Patrick Boylan, Parish Priest of St Michael's Church, Dún Laoghaire, assisted by Reverend John Moroney, blesses the floating lighthouse. Workers line the various levels of the structure for the ceremony.
The Kish Lighthouse was designed by Messrs Christiani & Nielsen Ltd, and was based on models previously used in Sweden. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1963 in Dún Laoghaire . In June 1965 the lighthouse was towed from Dún Laoghaire Harbour to Kish Bank. The operation of raising the tower was carried out on 27 July 1965. The Kish lighthouse was manned until 1992 when it was converted to automatic operation.
