Trade union members mark May Day with marches in Dublin and Belfast.

In Dublin a number of trade unions and workplaces celebrate May Day. About 250 trade union members carrying banners and placards march through the city from Parnell Square to Liberty Hall.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) said the May Day message is that the jobs crisis must be treated with the same urgency as the banking crisis.

The guest speaker at the Dublin rally is former British union leader Arthur Scargill, famous for taking on British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during the miners' strike in the 1980s. He urges public servants to continue their campaign of industrial action against pay cuts and warns against accepting the Croke Park deal.

In Belfast, there was the the biggest turnout for the May Day march and rally in the city centre for several years.
