An increasing number of young children own a smart device so how can they keep their online experience safe?

Most of the children asked at St Kevin's National School in Sallynoggin have their own smartphones.

A survey released to mark Safer Internet Day, an EU-wide initiative, found a third of children aged between eight and twelve have seen material online that has upset them. Campaigners are calling for the next government to do more to protect young people on the internet.

Pupils are upset by the humiliating content they have seen on YouTube and the negative comments they have received about their posts online.

Pupils at St Kevin's have produced their own video to encourage other children to be careful online.

Alex Cooney, CEO of CyberSafeIreland, says it is important that if children experience something upsetting online, they have somewhere or someone to report it to.

Cyberspace Ireland is calling for the next government to prioritise policies to help parents navigate their children's experiences online.
