Last minute rush on driving licence applications before mandatory driving tests comes into effect.

On 18 March 1964 driving tests came into operation in Ireland. For the first time new drivers were required to pass a test in order to obtain a licence. Thousands of people applied for a licence prior to this date.

There are long queues outside the Motor Registration Office in Dublin the day before the deadline. Drivers with many years experience, as well as those who have none, submit their applications ahead of the deadline of 17 March.

One young man tells RTÉ News that he applied today because he does not like the changes the new legislation will bring,

I thought it was a bit ridiculous.
