Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh responds to his nomination as President of Ireland by agreement of all political parties.

Following the sudden death of Erskine Childers on 17 November, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Labour political parties agreed to nominate Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh for the position as President of Ireland.

Upon the announcement of his nomination, Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh thanked the Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael Liam Cosgrave, the Tánaiste and Labour leader Brendan Corish, the leader of Fianna Fáil Jack Lynch and the members of their political parties for putting him forward for the position.

Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh had served previously as a barrister, Attorney General, Chief Justice of Ireland, and Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Communities.

As no other candidate was nominated, Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh became the fifth President of Ireland on 19 December 1974.
