Terry Wogan presents his breakfast programme on BBC Radio 2 for the last time.
A famous Limerick son Terry Wogan, hung up his headphones on the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show. He told listeners to 'Wake Up to Wogan' that presenting the breakfast programme for more than a quarter of a century had been a pleasure and a privilege.
I'm not going to pretend that this is not a sad day. You can probably hear it in my voice.
Terry Wogan bid a final farewell to eight million listeners after 27 years of presenting the BBC Radio 2 morning programme. He began his broadcasting career at RTÉ before making the move to the United Kingdom.
He also thanked his listeners in Ireland and now that he has a bit more time, he hopes to get to Thomond Park in Limerick more often to watch Munster play.
While he is retiring from the morning show, he will still be presenting a weekend programme for the BBC.
Fans of Terry Wogan were full of praise for the broadcaster.
He's so entertaining to listen to.
He's given us such a lot. We love him dearly.
He puts his popularity with listeners down to his longevity on the airwaves comparing himself to "an old kettle in the kitchen, an old carpet on the floor".
Signing off for the final time Terry Wogan parted with words to his listeners,
Thank you for being my friend.
