Calls for an increased Garda presence on city streets to manage large numbers of Christmas shoppers.
As the numbers of people on the streets of Dublin grow ahead of Christmas, there have been calls for increased crowd controls. Last week, overcrowding in the city centre resulted in a crush at a shopping arcade just off Henry Street.
Safety concerns have been raised as it is expected that up to half a million people will pass through Henry Street each day in the lead up to Christmas.
There have been calls for an increased Garda presence on our main streets.
Caroline Gill, Consumers Association of Ireland, says there is a need for more Gardaí to direct and control crowds should the need arise.
Bill Kelly, manager at Arnotts on Henry Street, claims that the crowds this year are no larger than usual but would welcome an increased Garda presence.
Gardaí say that when crowds are expected more officers are deployed to the streets. Shoppers are being advised by Gardaí to take extra care of their money and belongings during the Christmas period.
