Irish soldiers receive awards for courageous behaviour while on United Nations peacekeeping duty.
The soldiers were operating overseas under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Minister for Defence Patrick Cooney presented the medals for bravery at a ceremony held at Collins Barracks in Dublin. Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gerald O'Sullivan was also in attendance to congratulate the soldiers.
The Gallantry Medal was presented to Dubliner Commandant Michael Lynch for volunteering to recover the bodies of four United Nations military observers. The observers were killed in 1982 when their vehicle hit an anti-tank mine in the mountains outside Beirut at the height of the Israel Syria war.
It's only the seventh time ever this medal has ever been awarded.
Private Edward Doyle from Bagenalstown in County Carlow received the Distinguished Service Medal.
He got his medal for courage and determination in an ambush.
