The Grand Canal Festa gets underway at Robertstown.
The opening ceremony of the Grand Canal Festa took place at the Grand Canal Hotel, Robertstown, County Kildare.
The event was officially opened by Minister for Transport and Power Peter Barry. The minister and other guests arrived in Robertstown on a barge with people lining the banks of the canal.
The Grand Canal Festa, organised by Robertstown Muintir na Tire continues until 11 August. The festival programme includes lectures, discussions, exhibitions, 18th-century style banquets, barge trips, ballad sessions, and pipe band recitals.
