A report from Comhairle na Gaeilge makes recommendations on developing the Irish language.

Comhairle na Gaeilge was established by the Fianna Fáil government to advise on the future of Irish language policy. Consisting of 29 men and one woman, the group have produced a report that calls for changes in how the Irish language is taught in schools.

Noel Mulcahy, Chairman of Comhairle na Gaeilge, says that the success of the Gaeltacht summer schools means that there has been an increase in the demand to learn Irish.

I believe now that there is a genuine interest in the Irish language on the part of both the parents and the children.

The report shows a greater interest in the Irish language than most people had realised. He believes that the policy approach to teaching Irish in the past has not been clear enough. If the recommendations set out in the report by Comhairle na Gaeilge are implemented, it will lead to a greater demand for places in Irish language schools.
