Mayo stallion El Teide named champion hunter on the first day of The Dublin Horse Show.

Heavy rain forced many spectators indoors to the many trade stands at the RDS on the opening day of The Dublin Horse Show. Despite the rain judging continued in the show rings.

It wasn't long before the rosettes were being pinned up.

One of the first red rosettes went to the champion stallion El Teide. Breeder John Daly from Ballinrobe, County Mayo travelled to the show especially to see El Teide.

I always thought that he was a show-type horse and I'm not surprised that he did win the champion hunt.

El Teide's mother died the day after he was born and John Daly explains that it is difficult to get an orphan to grow up to be a champion. El Teide was lucky to get a foster mother that he took to which according to.

El Teide won the first race he ran as a four year old in Mayo. John Daly takes a somewhat unconventional approach to training horses like El Teide by having them swim them in Lough Mask.
