A much needed upgrade and development at Dun Laoghaire harbour has stalled.

Passengers and cars crossing to Holyhead in Wales have left from Dun Laoghaire's Carlisle Pier since 1977. New ferries added to the service that year were supposed to use the adjoining St Michael's Wharf. However, the new boats were 17 feet too wide. The terminal at the St Michael's Wharf now stands empty.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has faced growing pressure to update the facilities at the old Carlisle Pier or to expand the berths at St Michael's Wharf. The OPW says that it can not do either until the future of the rail line from Dun Laoghaire train station to Carlisle Pier is known.

While the new wharf stands idle, facilities at the old pier continue to be criticised.

People in Dun Laoghaire are unhappy with the facilities on offer. Former Mayor of Dun Laoghaire Jane Dillon wants to see a plan for the area developed with representations from the local business, tourism and leisure sectors.
