Students from Sancta Maria College in Dublin clean up a stretch of the river Dodder.

In record temperatures and basking sunshine, twenty students from Sancta Maria College in Ballyrowan, Dublin took on the task of cleaning up a section of the River Dodder.

All part of An Taisce's 'Work for Ireland' project.

The second year students challenge faced a river into which a car, bicycle wheels and supermarket trolleys had been dumped. The Dodder banks were strewn with litter. The girls cleaned up a 200 yard stretch of the river along Springfield Avenue. They cleared out trailor loads of rags, bikes and beds.

The students will have a sample of the water from the Dodder analysed and will carry out a survey of the trees and shrubs along the river bank. There are also plans for a further cleanup all the way down to Bushy Park.

The efforts of the Sancta Maria College students will go towards their 'Work for Ireland' project. The Work for Ireland competition has a prize for the winning school of a computer worth £2,000. Two runner-up schools will receive video cassette recorders.
