Brownies from across Ireland celebrate the centenary of their organisation at Dublin Zoo.
The Brownies are a branch of the Irish Girl Guides who cater for the seven to ten and year old age group. The first Brownie pack was in Newbridge, County Kildare in 1914. Today there are almost 4,000 Brownies in Ireland, and the organisation has members in almost 150 countries around the world.
At Dublin Zoo 3,000 Brownies gathered for a special centenary celebration. Some of them told RTÉ News why they enjoy Brownies so much,
Fun games.
Lots of crafts.
Loads of different activities that you're able to do.
Earning a wide variety of badges is also part of being a Brownie and as Jessica Hogan explains,
It was really fun.
Former Brownie Hazel Shiel is 93 now but says the motto, 'lend a hand’ and the ethos of thinking of others and contributing to local communities is something that has stayed with her throughout her life, because
Even when you’re small, you can lend a hand and help somebody.
