Former Great Southern Railway line will be converted into a greenway on the Ring of Kerry.
The government is to spend three and a half million euro developing a cycle track along the former Great Southern railway line between Glenbeigh and Reenard on the Ring of Kerry.
Minister for Transport Alan Kelly says the success of the Mayo Greenway has shown that this type of project attracts people to an area.
It'll be a huge addition to tourism.
Starting at Glenbeigh, cyclists and walkers will be able to make their way to Reenard via Caherciveen, a distance of almost 32km.
The old viaduct near Kells will also be part of the new greenway. Local businessman Pat Golden welcomes the announcement and believes that visitors to this part of south Kerry will become,
Enchanted with the people, the place and the surroundings.
Two more cycleways have been planned, from Clonea to Durrow in County Waterford, and from Galway city to Moycullen. Work on all three projects are due to be completed within two years.
