A storm leaves a trail of destruction across Ireland.

Strong winds swept across the country on the night of 27 January and into 28 January. Many roads were left impassable, as the high winds took down trees, power lines and damaged buildings.

power supplies were down, and homes were damaged and in some cases destroyed.

The winds left trees and telegraph poles blocking roads and cut off power supplies. Workmen and volunteers are out in force to clear debris and trees and to repair damaged telephone and electricity lines.

A floating bridge was blown from its moorings on the River Shannon in Athlone. A caravan was smashed to pieces in Carraroe, Galway. Part of the roof of the Leisureland complex in Salthill, Galway was badly damaged. While in Dingle a trawler was grounded and damage was done to the sea wall. In Culleenamore, County Sligo, part of a house was destroyed by the strong winds.
