University of Limerick confers honorary doctorates on a writer, an activist and a broadcaster.

Mary Davis of the Special Olympics, novelist Edna O'Brien and broadcaster Terry Wogan have all received honours from the Univeristy of Limerick.

One of the best known broadcasters in Ireland and Britain, Limerick born Terry Wogan received his honorary doctorate in recognition of his services to broadcasting. Grateful for the honour he says,

I'll always be just plain, simple, old Terry.

Mary Davis received her honorary doctorate for the role she played in the Special Olympics World Games. Happy to receive the doctorate she dedicates it to all the people, including 30,000 volunteers, who worked so hard to make sure that the games were a success.

Edna O'Brien received her doctorate for her contribution to literature. She sees the award as a reminder to some of her detractors that she is still around and continues to write.

Chancellor of the University of Limerick, Sean Donlon, described the occasion as a celebration of Irish achievement at home and abroad.
