Portumna announced tidy town winner in Galway County Council competition.

For the second time the attractive town of Portumna on the River Shannon wins first prize at the Tidy Towns competition sponsored by Galway County Council. Its picturesque location and natural amenities,

Gives it a natural advantage over other Galway towns.

The competition judges were very impressed by the involvement of Portumna's young people who launched a five point action programme. They drew up a development plan, implemented an anti litter campaign, created a small job centre, initiated a junior street leader’s league and helped to promote a tree and shrub planting programme.

The adjudicators were particularly impressed by the small job centre,

Through which young people made themselves available for all kinds of tidying up and odd jobs.

Portumna receives the top prize of £1,000 from an overall £6,000 prize fund. The second place went to Gort, the third to Laurencetown, the fourth to Mountbellew and the fifth to Kinvara.

To encourage more towns and villages to take part in Tidy Towns, Galway County Council is putting up a prize fund of £2,500 for first time entrants.

Portumna buoyed by the regional win is hoping for similar success at the national Tidy Towns competition.
