Remembrance Day commemorated at the German War Cemetery in Glencree, County Wicklow.
For the first time representatives from the British Legion, the Defence Forces, Air Corps and Naval Service gather with members of the German community in a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation to remember those who died in the First World War (1914 – 1918) and Second World War (1939-1945).
Approximately 150 German war victims are buried here, many unnamed.
Wreaths were laid by the German community and also by a representative of the British ambassador, John Beale. There has been some controversy surrounding this year's remembrance ceremonies, but
The feeling here was one of unity and reconciliation.
Speaking at the event German ambassador to Ireland Ekkehard Eichoff told those present that the people of Germany and their European neighbours are united in the conviction that,
What happened in the two world wars must never happen again.
