RTÉ outlines the reasons for an increase in the cost of the television licence fee.
On 1 December, the price of a colour television licence is set to rise by £7 to £38. The price of a black and white licence is to go up by £4.50 to £23.
Robert Gahan from RTÉ explains that the licence fee increase will aid the cost of running the second television channel RTÉ 2 which goes on air on 2 November. The additional revenue from the licence fee price rise will also be used to fund a second radio channel.
All of this amounts to an improvement in the provision of a television and radio service for the Irish public,
