Belfast students take to the streets in in response to the violent end the RUC brought to a civil rights demonstration in Derry.

More than 2,000 Queen's University Belfast take part in a non-sectarian, peaceful protest against the denial of civil rights and Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) brutality in dealing with peaceful demonstrators at the civil rights march held in Derry on 5 October 1968.

The students plan to march on Belfast’s City Hall and hold a meeting in front of the building. Ian Paisley and his supporters hold a counter-demonstration near City Hall.

The students march along Linenhall street chanting slogans such as 'Craig out’ and ‘one man, one vote’. A police cordon prevents the demonstration from going any further. Unable to reach City Hall, the students stage a sit-down protest at Linenhall Street.
