World champion ploughman John Whelan explains the intricacies of competitive ploughing.

John Whelan from Gusserane County Wexford has been on a roll for the last twelve months. During this time he took home the 2012 National Ploughing Championship title and followed that up by winning the European Ploughing Championships. This year he travelled to Canada, and won the World Ploughman title.

What makes a good ploughman? John Whelan believes a lot depends on the amount of effort you put in.

It is like any other sport, you get out what you put in.

With three hundred and twenty ploughmen competing over the next three days for a variety of national titles, John Whelan is ready for the challenge of competing in as a World Champion in Ratheniska County Laois,

It's a great honour and privilege for me to come back here as a world champion.
