The first major exhibition of the work of artist Andy Warhol will be at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Kilmainham, Dublin. The exhibition comprises a hundred pieces drawn mainly from the Warhol Museum in Pennsylvania.

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh in 1928 to eastern European parents. In 1949, he made the move to New York where he became one of America's leading commercial artists. By the 1960s, he began to work in fine art and exhibited his works of pop culture and sculpture.

Heinz boxes, Marilyns, and Campbells soup cans.

Curator of the exhibition, Mark Francis, says that Andy Warhol had a huge influence on how we view contemporary life.

It's almost impossible to deal with modern art without taking Warhol's work into account.

Throughout a 30 year career, Andy Warhol transformed contemporary art. His work concentrated on fundamental human themes such as the beauty, glamour of youth, fame, material culture, the passage of time, and the presence of death.

He was not just a painter but a filmmaker, a publisher of magazines, producer of The Velvet Underground.

Works on display include examples of Andy Warhol's famous cow wallpaper and his cloud pillows. The exhibition runs until March 1998.
