An Taoiseach opens a new Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter in Rathfarnham.

Albert Reynolds founded the pet food business C&D Foods in Edgeworthstown, County Longford. Today as Taoiseach Albert Reynolds he opens the new Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) shelter in Stocking Lane, Rathfarnham.

A registered charity the DSPCA has been in existence since 1840, caring for sick, injured and cruelly treated animals in the city and county of Dublin. The DSPCA was previously based at Grand Canal Quay in Dublin city centre. The new campus,

Is a health farm for animals, here they can relax and recover, some from the most horrific forms of abuse.

A DSPCA officer demonstrates some pieces of equipment seized from a dog fight. The people involved in the dog fight were prosecuted and convicted of cruelty to animals.

The money behind the new shelter comes from donations and support from DSPCA members. Some of those in attendance are very impressed with how the rescued animals are being treated,

They're getting tender loving care.

An expanded phase two of the south Dublin shelter is set to open later in 1993.
