Eight creative contestants take part in an Easter bonnet competition.
Gay Byrne introduces a frivolous caper for the Easter season. Eight people were asked to create some Easter bonnets for the show and,
They came up with the most ridiculous collection you have ever seen in your life.
The first contestant is Cheryl Freeney. She is wearing a satin daffodil bonnet titled 'Spring Fever' made by trainee designer Christine O’Donovan.
Next up is Maureen Ahern is wearing a creation which she calls ‘Goodnight Vienna’ made from netting, tulle and some silk.
Jenny Slevin wears her own creation entitled ‘Bird of Paradise’ as it resembles a bird with fine plumage.
Contestant number four is model Grace O'Shaughnessy wearing ‘Mint Julep’ by Mary Connolly. This ensemble made from tulle, satin trim and artificial flowers reminds Gay Byrne of something,
It looks like a Pimm's No 1 gone astray.
Up next is Geraldine Brand wearing ‘Froth and Flowers’ made by the Irish international bridge Champion Barbara Seligman. This Easter bonnet includes artificial birds and the swans on the crown are made by Barbara Seligman’s sister June Levine.
The sixth contestant is National College of Art and Design (NCAD) student Patricia Keilthy. She is wearing ‘Japanese Easter’ her own creation fashioned from feathers and curtain fabric and lining. Gay Byrne declares her ensemble,
Very inventive.
Sharon Bacon from ‘Our Times’ wears ‘Bugsy Malone’ an Easter bonnet that includes flowers, ribbons and an artificial rabbit. She took two days to make this creation.
The final Easter bonnet is ‘Kissin’ Cousins’ designed and worn by Noelle Campbell-Sharp. This hat includes an artificial dove with a nest of eggs and comes with a trick,
Would you like to pull my ribbon Gay?
The ribbon is pulled to reveal a real live dove. This dove belongs to 15 year old Ricky Linden, Ireland's youngest magician and a guest panellist on this edition of 'The Late Late Show'. Ricky Linden is called on set to remove the bird before it has an accident. However, he is too late. With much mirth Gay Byrne decides,
I think it can be described as a tiny whoopsie.
Following a show of hands from the audience, Sharon Bacon was declared the winner of the Easter bonnet competition.
This episode of 'The Late Late Show' was broadcast on 25 March 1978. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
