The Irish Anti-War Movement demonstrate at Shannon Airport.

A massive security operation is mounted by An Garda Síochána at Shannon Airport in County Clare as up to 800 people take part in a peace demonstration organised by the Irish Anti-War Movement.

Groups from cities and towns all over the country take part in the protest. The anti-war activists disapprove of the Irish government's decision to allow US planes on route to the Iraq war to land and refuel at Shannon Airport.

The demonstration is attended by a number of politicians, including Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins. Speakers at the rally promised the Irish Anti-War Movement would continue to highlight the need for the United Nations to play a central role in the re-building of Iraq. They also said the Irish people would not allow the government to fudge on the issue of Shannon Airport in the future.

The activists walked to the airport from Shannon Town centre. Between 350 to 400 Gardaí were on hand to prevent any breach of security.
