A collection of self portraits by Irish artists is being put together in Limerick.

The National Self Portrait Collection at the National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE) has developed from a small local collection. It is under the control of a board of trustees representing different artistic and educational interests.

Dr Ed Walsh the President of NIHE describes the works as a unique collection of Irish heritage. The collection includes works that have been repatriated from abroad. One self portrait is by noted Irish artist Patrick Tuohy. A participant in the Eater Rising in 1916, Patrick Tuohy was a contemporary of James Joyce. He died by suicide in New York in 1930. Ed Walsh says that the plan is to expand the collection to pay tribute to Irish artists.

These are the self portraits of the best known Irish artists.

Works by 12 other Irish artists including Louis le Brocquy and Tim Goulding have been added to the collection recently.
