Payment for parking in Dublin will see meters being replaced with a pay and display system.
The parking meters have been in place on the streets of Dublin since 1970.
Dubliners have fed millions of pounds into parking meters.
The meter network is being replaced by Dublin Corporation with a pay and display system to make parking more consumer friendly. The new machines will charge motorists £1 per hour for parking.
Dublin Corporation is spending a million pounds this year on replacing around 2,200 meters. A total of 3,800 parking meters will be replaced in the coming years.
This afternoon, money from meters on Stephen's Green and surrounding streets was collected for the last time.
Instead of one meter per vehicle, there will now be one pay and display machine per 17 cars reducing the amount of clutter on pavements.
While prices have increased, it is still cheaper to park on the street than in a multi-storey carpark.
Traffic warden John McGrath says that this is a whole new system for which traffic wardens will need to be trained.
