Work is due to begin on a project to protect the harbour at Greystones in Wicklow.
The coastal village and seaside resort of Greystones in County Wicklow is to spend £8,000 on a protection scheme for the harbour.
The project is being undertaken by the Greystones Civic Association (GCA) with financial support from Wicklow County Council and Bord Fáilte.
Founded in the late 1950s, the aim of the GCA is to make Greystones a better place for everyone to live. One of the GCA's key objectives is to make improvements to the harbour area. It has already carried out a number of improvements, laying a road linking the cliff walk and the harbour and planting trees and shrubs.
The Greystones coastline is particularly prone to rapid erosion. In the proposed harbour protection scheme,
Concrete beams and large rocks from quarries in Arklow will be placed between the north wall of the harbour and the beach, to prevent storm damage to the wall and to halt erosion of the beach.
