Concern is mounting for the welfare of kidnapped racehorse Shergar.
Shergar was taken from Ballymany Stud in Kildare by an armed gang on 8 February 1983. Despite an intensive search to date the whereabouts of the Epsom Derby winning racehorse who is worth £10 million is still a mystery.
A telephone call was made to the home of trainer Jeremy Maxwell on Friday claiming to be from the kidnappers stating that Shergar had been injured and put down.
Speaking to the media, Chief Superintendent James Murphy appealed to the kidnappers to produce proof that Shergar is still alive. He also reiterated that money should not be handed over.
From the first morning I believed it was wrong that any ransom should be negotiated.
