Efforts to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease across the border.

With confirmed cases of foot and mouth in Britain on the rise, officials from the Department of Agriculture are on duty in an effort to prevent the disease coming south of the border.

All annual leave for customs officers in the Republic of Ireland was cancelled for the weekend to ensure 24 hour monitoring of traffic across the border from infected areas.

Checks are carried out at customs posts along the border with vehicles and footwear being sprayed with disinfectant.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Neil Blaney TD announced new controls on the movement of cattle, sheep and pigs from infected areas in Northern Ireland and between marts in the Republic of Ireland.
