Centenary celebrations have been taking place in Galway to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of St Joseph's College, Nun's Island.
The celebrations for the foundation of St Joseph's College (also known as 'The Bish'), commenced last Monday 22 October, with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St Nicholas' Pro-Cathedral in the city, attended by President Éamon de Valera.
Established by the Patrician Brothers in 1862 on Nun’s Island, this secondary school has a strong history of providing education for boys in Galway. Its proudest achievement is the high numbers who have gone on to study at University College Galway, says headmaster Rev Bro Valerian Whelan,
The favourite degrees have been engineering and science, as well as medicine.
As regards developments in Irish education, Bro Valerian would like to see the Leaving Certificate examinations split between Fifth and Six Year, which would take pressure off students,
It’s giving a pretty heavy load to pupils in their final year.
