The N5 Charlestown Bypass in County Mayo is dedicated to the journalist and author John Healy.
In 1967 the Mayo born journalist and author John Healy wrote his book 'No One Shouted Stop (Death of an Irish Town)' to highlight what he saw as the slow death of his native Charlestown through emigration and unemployment.
Forty years on and the president of the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce George Craig is proud to report the town is flourishing.
Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey officially opens the N5 Charlestown Bypass, named The John Healy Road. Costing €81 million the 18 kilometre bypass is Mayo's longest stretch of new road.
For members of John Healy's family the day is emotional. Evelyn Healy considers the bypass a great tribute to her late husband,
Really it is more than I ever hoped for and I am delighted that John will be remembered in the history of Mayo.
John Healy’s brother Kevin believes
John tried hard for the west; he was passionate for the west.
To the delight of those attending the opening ceremony Noel Dempsey travels along the new bypass in a 1934 Austin.
