A section of a new ring road has opened around Waterford city.

Waterford looks to address congestion by diverting traffic away from the city centre. On Saturday 1 May Lord Mayor of Waterford Councillor Tom Browne officially opened a new road linking Ballytruckle with the Tramore Road,

The first modern stretch of roadway that the city has seen in many a long day.

This is the first phase of a project by Waterford Corporation to upgrade its roads. The ultimate objective is the creation of an inner ring road which will in time link up with an outer ring road, enabling motor traffic to avoid the city centre altogether.

As City Engineer Paddy Flood explains, the planned route of the road included bogland, sections of solid rock, the Saint John's River and a bridge, and presented plenty of challenges.

It was rather an interesting engineering problem to get over…
