An amateur production of The Playboy of the Western World featuring broadcasters Mike Murphy and Gay Byrne will be live on RTÉ radio.
The unique amateur production of John Millington Synge's 'The Playboy of the Western World' will be at The Abbey Theatre and is to be broadcast live on radio.
The production features broadcasters Gay Byrne and Mike Murphy as Jimmy Farrell and Philly Cullen and will be broadcast live on radio on the The Gay Byrne Show tomorrow morning from the the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The live production will broadcast to the largest audience ever of a play on Irish radio.
Final rehearsals are underway at The Abbey Theatre, the first amateur production put on at the national theatre.
Five months and 300 auditions later, the first eleven took to the hallowed stage of the Abbey Theatre this afternoon for the final press rehearsal.
It is something of a widely known secret around the Abbey that neither Gay Byrne nor Mike Murphy know their lines yet. This afternoon, they were being whipped into shape for the inaugural live performance.
Producer Seamus Hoey says that the rehearsals are going very well and pays tribute to the cast who he says are up to the standard of any production of 'Playboy of the Western World'.
Mary Monaghan who plays Pegeen Mike says that Gay Byrne and Mike Murphy fitted into the team very well and says they do not need to be taught anything.
The production also featured Denise Burns as Widow Quin, Tony Behan as Old Mahon
