Calls are made for a public inquiry into the Central Hotel fire in Bundoran, County Donegal.
On 8 August 1980, a fire broke out in the Central Hotel in Bundoran causing the death of 10 people, five of them children. To date the public have not received any information about the circumstances surrounding the fire that ravaged the hotel.
Soon after the fire occurred, an investigation by Donegal County Council was undertaken by the acting fire officer. Seven days later a preliminary notice for a malicious damages claim against the council was lodged by the owner of the hotel. Whether or not this claim is to proceed has yet to be decided.
From the outset, Chairman of Bundoran Urban District Council Sean Mcniff has felt the investigation into the fire at the Central Hotel must be a public one. He is calling for a public inquiry,
I wouldn't like to have this inquiry in camera, I think it is very important that the public should know exactly what happened.
