Tánaiste and leader of the Progressive Democrats Mary Harney marries Brian Geoghegan in a private civil ceremony in Dublin.
Amid a very busy schedule, the Tánaiste Mary Harney found time to get married between meetings yesterday. Mary Harney and Brian Geoghegan told virtually nobody of their plans and each had only a sister in attendance at a ceremony in the Dublin Registry Office.
Mary Harney started yesterday morning with a budget meeting with the Taoiseach and the Minister for Finance and ended the day getting married. Brian Geoghegan says that they decided to get married late in the day to avoid any publicity.
It was back to business as usual today for the Tánaiste and her husband following their secret marriage. They were cheered and applauded at a Progressive Democrat General Council meeting in Thurles as news of their marriage became public.
Speaking to RTÉ News, the Tánaiste said,
Yesterday was the happiest day of my life.
The couple have plans for more formal celebrations with family and friends before Christmas and then plan to go on honeymoon.
